Donald Trump’s tweets have regularly followed a pattern: Introduce the unthinkable, repeat until familiar, move on to the even more unthinkable.

Donald Trump’s ability to grant himself freedom from the law has apparently been blessed by the legal scholars Rudy and Giuliani. And  is heartily approved by the Law School of Fox and Friends.

But there is little doubt Trump is introducing this act of auto-absolution not because he thinks he won’t use it, but because he absolutely, positively will. This is where he is going. Believe the autocrat.

Over the weekend, the letter from Trump’s legal team and the rambling appearances from Rudy Giuliani amounted to nothing short of a declaration of kingship. Trump is only making it clear that none of what was said in this ramping up of his ability to thumb his nose at justice, and especially at the Justice Department, was in error. He’s doubling down.

Having limbered up his pardoning power by showing that he could pardon people for political expediency and as a reward for hating Barack Obama, he’s now going to practice the ultimate expression of both.

It’s anti-democratic. Anti-legal. Anti-American. 100 percent Trump.
