BEYOND THE LIGHTHOUSE

Lighthouses have been built all over the world, with the intent to guide boats and ships along dangerous coastlines and into safe harbors. These beacons are generally placed on land or upon rocky shoals so as to mark particular dangers to vessels passing along the coast or in and out of the harbor. The metaphor of the Lighthouse, has been employed historically to represent various concepts, including guiding the souls of those in peril from the storms of human machinations, into a safe harbor.

From the view of the sailor approaching land at night the beacon of the lighthouse appears first to confirm that land is near. The particular rhythm of the light identifies which one it is. Taking note of the time the light was first visible on the horizon together with the compass bearing and the height of the lighthouse (listed on the chart) will give a fair estimate of how far away it is and when it will be safe to approach it.

The sailor’s view of, beyond the Light House, is the safety of the harbor into which he will be guided. The view of one standing next to the lighthouse and looking out over the expanse of the sea is the, apparently endless, potential for new adventures in far distant lands. Many sailors have embarked upon great journeys over the oceans of the world, seeking adventure and wealth. Some have returned to their first safe harbors with both and others have remained in the sea with neither. Of course the same can be said of any endeavor in this mortal life. Being a carpenter or even a school teacher, have their hazards.

Passing beyond the lighthouse, from the safe harbor, out onto a great ocean, requires either a fool hardy, careless mind or a courageous and careful mind. Those who go carefully out to sea will be more likely to return safely, than those who go carelessly. This rule applies to every walk of life. It also applies to those who seek a safe harbor in the eternities. Those who are not careful of the well-being of others or even the safety of their own souls are likely to be enveloped in the maelstrom of uncaring life, from which a return to peace and love may be extremely difficult or even impossible.

We must especially and always remember three things as we journey in this life. God loves us eternally. The Spirit of God will not contend with men beyond certain limits. God will not be mocked. If we know that God loves each one of us independently and individually we will also love Him and want to be with him in His kingdom forever, even with our families. There is no other place in this Universe that is based upon pure love and exalting joy, than the kingdom of our Eternal Father, the Most High God.

Even if we venture beyond the light house, into uncharted waters, we may journey a long ways before we will be beyond the reach of the light, the Love of God. His voice can reach even to the very limits of this Universe and call us back to that light and the safety of his harbor. We will be left to founder in darkness only if we choose to be. Father can hold out his offer but the choice to accept it remains with each one of us. The whole cost to each of us for this amazing destiny is that we learn to Love.
