MAYOR RAWLINGS-BLAKE: What we see tonight that is going on in our city is very disturbing. It is very clear there is a difference between what we saw over the past week with the peaceful protests, those who wish to seek justice, those who wish to be heard, and want answers and the difference between those protests and the thugs who only want to incite violence and destroy our city.
I’m a life-long resident of Baltimore and too many people have spent generations building up this city for it to be destroyed by thugs who in a very senseless way are trying to tear down what so many have fought for. Tearing down businesses. Tearing down and destroying property, things that we know will impact our community for years. We are deploying every resource possible to gain control of the situation and to ensure peace moving forward.
I’ve been in contact with our governor and he has agreed — and I have requested and he has agreed to deploy the national guard as soon as they are available. They will be immediately deployed. We’ve ordered a curfew be in effect, instituting tomorrow the curfew city wide, 10:00 p.m., to 5:00 a.m. Again, there will be a city wide curfew, 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. This preliminary curfew will last for one week and be extended as it is necessary.
Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake held a press conference Saturday night after a police standoff with protestors. In the clip she says she told police to give protestors “space to destroy.”
‘I made it very clear that I work with the police and instructed them to do everything that they could to make sure that the protesters were able to exercise their right to free speech.
“It’s a very delicate balancing act. Because while we try to make sure that they were protected from the cars and other things that were going on, we also gave those who wished to destroy space to do that as well. And we worked very hard to keep that balance and to put ourselves in the best position to de-escalate.”

BALTIMORE — With the words “black lives matter” projected in capital letters on the walls, mourners at a Baptist church here on Monday filed past the open coffin of Freddie Gray, the 25-year-old whose death from a spinal cord injury while in police custody set off protests that turned violent over the weekend.
Hundreds were expected to turn out for Mr. Gray’s funeral. Before it began, Melissa McDonald, 36, a first cousin, remembered Mr. Gray, as others did, as a funny, easygoing man with a big heart who had dreams beyond the West Baltimore neighborhood where he had been arrested twice on drug charges before the police stopped him in what ultimately became a fatal encounter this month.

Ms. McDonald said she believed that Mr. Gray died for a reason — to bring attention to police treatment of young black men. “Freddie always said he had a purpose in life; I believe that purpose has been served,” she said, adding that family members were dismayed by the violence that erupted over the weekend.
As Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake issued a “call for peace,” the Baltimore police said Sunday that 35 people — 31 adults and four juveniles — had been arrested, and that six officers had sustained minor injuries Saturday night as demonstrators smashed a storefront window, threw rocks and bottles, and scuffled with officers in riot gear outside Camden Yards, the Orioles’ downtown baseball stadium.
