On April 23rd, 2015, several Winnipeg activists gathered outside the Victoria Inn where Stephen Harper was making a private speech to business leaders in Winnipeg. During the conference, more than a dozen protesters stood outside holding signs. People from several political ideologies showed up and conversed. There was an incredibly large police presence but the police let us do our thing and we let them do their thing.
The rally was a last second notice kind of event. There were men walking around with curly wires going into their ears and talking into their sleeves. It was the usual type of security protocol that follows a Prime Minister like Stephen Harper.
We bullhorned the building regarding the police state Bill C-51, Harper’s wars of aggression (in Iraq, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Syria, etc.), the new world order, the North American Union, his insistence on ignoring first nations people and more. Others protested Harper for other reasons like cuts to Canada Post. It was a mixed message, but all came together against him.
Stephen Harper is not a conservative by ideology. He just belongs to a party called the Conservative Party. Harper’s true political ideology seems to follow corporate fascism. He pre-arranges every question the press asks him. He increases the size and scope of government with every month he’s in office (not conservative).
If he were truly conservative by its classic ideological definition, there wouldn’t be a drug war, there wouldn’t be wars of aggression, he would prohibit individual liberties and things like Bill C-51 would never have existed under his watch. He’s redefined conservatism to mean whatever he wants it to mean and people believe it.
We spoke to John Doull (a member of WAM and libertarian), Lorraine Clements (a die hard human rights activist), Darrell Rankin of the Communist Party and we even bumped into officer friendly again! Officer friendly is the name we give the kind Winnipeg police officer that never harasses us at protests and let’s us do our thing.

The rally was a success, though it was impossible to actually approach Stephen Harper. The security was tough, but we got our message across.
