An Amtrak passenger train derailed after crashing into a tractor trailer truck in North Carolina on Monday, sending some 40 passengers to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, state officials said.
The train, carrying more than 200 passengers, was traveling from Charlotte, North Carolina, to New York when it hit a truck that had been hauling heavy equipment and apparently got stuck on tracks in Halifax County near the Virginia border, said Heather Joyner, communications director of the county’s Emergency 911.

This is a video I made on Saturday March 14, 2015 of Amtrak train the Silver Star number 91 running over and killing a pedestrian in Dover Florida. There were 3 people trespassing on the tracks. Two got off while the other one kept walking in an apparent suicide attempt. The train was traveling near 80 MPH and went in to emergency. After striking the pedestrian the train came to a stop about 1/2 mile east. The train was delayed 4 hours on an on going investigation.
First this video shows the Amtrak train 5 miles before the accident going through Plant City Florida before striking the pedestrian.
I then rush to the accident scene and filmed the emergency responders and Amtrak at the accident location.
There after I filmed the same train coming back through Plant City after the accident.

The 1995 Palo Verde derailment took place on October 9, when Amtrak’s Sunset Limited derailed near Palo Verde, Arizona on the Southern Pacific Railroad tracks. Two locomotives and eight of the twelve cars derailed, four of them falling 30 feet off a trestle bridge into a dry river bed.
Mike Bates, a sleeping car attendant, was killed. 78 other people were injured and 12 of them seriously. Four typewritten notes attacking the ATF and the FBI for the 1993 Waco Siege, criticizing local law enforcement and signed “Sons of the Gestapo” were found near the scene of the crash indicating that the train had been sabotaged.
All four notes were identical copies of the same message. Two of the notes were found by Neal Hallford, a passenger traveling from Oklahoma to San Diego, California. It was found that the rails had been shifted out of position to cause the derailment but, only after they had been connected with wires. This kept the track circuit closed, circumventing safety systems designed to warn locomotive engineers of track problems and suggested that the saboteurs had a working knowledge of railroads.

Two dozen people were injured, but none seriously, when an Amtrak passenger train collided with a tractor-trailer in northwestern Indiana early Tuesday, officials told NBC Chicago.
Chief Deputy A.J. Alletto with the White County Sheriff’s Office, the agency handling the investigation of the crash in a rural area about 25 miles north of Lafayette, said 24 people complained of pain.
Alletto and Monticello Asst. Fire Chief Robert Hickman said eight passengers were treated for minor injuries at IU White Memorial Hospital but some were released by 10 a.m. Another sixteen were treated on the scene by paramedics. Six children were not injured but were taken to the hospital to be with their parents.
The remaining passengers were kept on the train until commercial buses provided by Amtrak could shuttle them to Chicago.
Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said Hoosier State train 851 carrying 56 passengers and three crew members departed Indianapolis at 6 a.m. ET. The crash happened about one hour and 20 minutes later along the crossing at U.S. 421 near the White County town of Reynolds.

Amtrak Wolverine train #351 wrecked February 1st, 2012 at Leoni, Michigan. The accident occurred around 8:20AM between Portage Road and Michigan Ave., when the train collided with the trailer of a low-boy flatbed truck. The truck driver had driven on to the grade crossing, but stopped to check and make sure his trailer didn’t bottom out. He exited the cab of his truck to check, when suddenly, the railroad crossing gates started to close. The truck driver watched in horror as the train crushed the trailer, then crashed speedily into the ditch. Thankfully, there were no fatalities. However, six people were seriously injured. Thanks to the efforts of the engineer the train was slowed before impact, which is one of the main reasons no one was killed. He himself was VERY lucky to walk away alive. On another note, #128 was the same locomotive that hit a speeding car back in 2009 that tried beating the train. Amtrak officials aren’t sure if they’ll salvage #128, the Cafe, and the Horizon, or attempt restoring them. If you have an opinion regarding the truck driver, please post a comment!

Best Answer: although there is stock in the company, the U.S. Govt owns all the stock and it is not traded in any way.
so even though it is set up as a sort of semi-official company, it is 100% government owned and operated.
The United States Gov’t owns the equipment, and they hire the crews. They pay RR companies for the rights to operate it on their lines.
