Why I changed my mind about medicinal cannabis | Hugh Hempel | TEDxUniversityofNevada

Published on Feb 3, 2015

Hugh Hempel is a technology industry veteran turned health care entrepreneur. In this moving talk he discusses how medicinal cannabis has enriched the lives of his ailing 11 year-old daughters. This talk will challenge your views of medical marijuana.

Hugh Hempel is a technology industry veteran turned healthcare entrepreneur. During his 30-year career in high technology, Hugh has held numerous senior management positions in many innovative and pioneering technology companies.

As chief operating officer and co-founder of Hopelink, Hugh launched one of the first Healthcare Internet start-ups that matched cancer patients with online clinical trials. Prior to founding Hopelink, Hugh held a variety of positions at Netscape, the first successful consumer Web browser software company. As Director of Online Marketing and Director of Enterprise Sales and Marketing, Hugh worked with the team that helped make the Web a reality for millions of people worldwide.

Prior to joining Netscape, Hugh worked as Manager of Engineering and Science markets for Apple Computer. While at Apple, he helped define the Apple Newton Messagepad, Apple’s first handheld computer that was a revolution in personal computing.

Hugh also held the position of Director at Computervision, an early pioneer in Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) software used by companies around the world to develop automotive and aerospace products. Hugh’s first job in the technology industry was as a National Accounts Representative for IBM after graduating with a B.S. in Engineering Management from the University of Vermont.

In 2006, Hugh’s 10 year old identical twin daughters were diagnosed with a rare and fatal neurodegenerative disease called Niemann Pick Type C, often referred to as “Childhood Alzheimer’s.” Since that time, Hugh and his wife Chris have immersed themselves in science and medicine and discovered through their own research that a simple sugar compound called cyclodextrin could save their twins’ lives. As parents, they successfully filed applications with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and received permission to try this never before used treatment on their daughters.

The Hempel’s journey to develop cyclodextrin has made international headlines and was recently featured in The Wall Street Journal in a 10 chapter story entitled, “A Desperate Fight to Save Kids and Change Science,” as well as in a documentary called “Here. Us. Now.” More information can be found at http://projects.wsj.com/trials and http://here-us-now.com/.

In 2009, Hugh and his wife Chris became interested in Cannabidiol (CBD), one of at least 80 active cannabinoids identified in marijuana and hemp, as his twins suffer from intractable seizures as a result of their disease and experience up to a 100 seizures a week. Through extensive research, they learned that cannabinoid receptors are involved in a vast array of functions in the body, including helping to control brain and nerve activity (including memory and pain), energy metabolism, heart function, and the immune system. After realizing pharmaceutical grade cannabis products were unavailable for their daughters and other patients in Nevada, the Hempel’s decided to create a Nevada based “cannabusiness” focused on legally developing and distributing high-quality flowers, extracts and concentrates at competitive prices.

Hugh sits on the Board of Directors for The Global Genes Project, a leading rare and genetic disease non-profit advocacy organization based in California. He is a frequent speaker on a variety of healthcare topics including small clinical trial design, new drug discovery, and patient reported outcome systems for more efficient clinical research.

Hugh aims to create a large scale cannabis clinical research clearing house in an effort to better elucidate the potential benefits of this cannabis plant. Until such time as there are readily available quality cannabis medicinal products on the market, this goal is nearly impossible. The creation of a pharmaceutical quality cannabis supply network is the first step towards this larger goal of building knowledge about using cannabis to improve health.

Cannabis has been absolutely life saving for our son, a wounded warrior, who suffers from PTSD, TBI, and pain from combat injuries. It alleviates nightmares, he can sleep, and not be a zombie from all the pharmaceuticals that it has replaced. I am an RN and a huge advocate for legalizing marijuana. It is an amazing bronchodilator and effective treatment for asthmatics. It is not a gateway drug. It simply works. I was baffled as to why it has been demonized and much maligned until I did some research. Very enlightening. William Randolph Hearst saw hemp as direct completion with his timber, of which, he needed for paper pulp mills. He ran a very effective smear campaign. I suspect Big Pharma will fight it as it will decrease their profits, as will the alcohol industry. I am praying other states will follow Colorado and Washington and legalize marijuana for not only medical but recreational use.
Psilocybinxs: I hear you. I know many people who could be helped by using cannabis medicinally, but it’s so hard to get through to some of them who have been brainwashed for so long, and the stigma that goes along with it certainly doesn’t help. Hopefully not too much longer before free sharing of information and the internet wins.
Bawling my eyes out now… I have a nephew with Cerebral Palsy and my sister is too afraid to pursue cannabis as a treatment for his muscular tightness. I knew it can help. I’ll be showing this video to her tonight.

The following  articles were found on the internet during my research of Medicinal Marijuana *In October 2003 US Patent number 6,630,507 titled “Cannabinoids as Antioxidants and Neuroprotectants” was assigned to the United States Of America as represented by the Department of Human Services. The patent mentions cannabidiols ability as an anti-eleptic, to treat glaucoma, lack of serious side effects in large doses, its neuroprotectant properties, its ability to protect against cellular damage, its ability to protect brains from ischemic damage, its antianxiety effect and its superior antioxidant activity in the treatment of oxidation associated diseases. ( antianxiety: is intervention that reduces the effects of anxiety) *The UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT sees the benefits of CBD oil enough to apply for a patent on it ….Hurry and get your bottle while its still affordable. Medical marijuana is not new, and the medical community has been writing about it for a long time. There were in fact hundreds of journal articles, mostly documenting the benefits. Most of those papers, however, were written between the years 1840 and 1930. The papers described the use of medical marijuana to treat “neuralgia, convulsive disorders, emaciation,” among other things. It could potentially help people who really need it. *Canabanoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease * So many aspects of cannabis medicinal and nutritional products are advancing rapidly ******Canabanoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease **** So many aspects of cannabis medicinal and nutritional products are advancing so rapidly that keeping on-top of it all is quite a job. Not only are new product lines emerging, but new whole product categories. For instance, an industry associate is growing a low-THC, high CBG strain bred in Germany on farmland in Kentucky. CBG, as you’ll read below, has research indicating it can be useful treating inflammation, cancer and promoting bone-growth. CBD and CBG are but two of scores of cannabinoids, many of which may be medically valuable. The only ones that are intoxicants are THC and THCV. The only cannabinoid mentioned anywhere in Massachusetts law is THC. We at CBD Please hope to have a wide variety of cannabinoid products available – not just CBD. We also hope to be able to offer cannabis products containing THC as well after cannabis use is legalized following the November 2016 election. ******Cannabinoids are chemicals unique to the cannabis plant; though some are found in other plants as well. Research has pointed out that in general the medical effects of cannabinoids are aided by a synergistic combination of multiple cannabiniods mixed with terpenes. ******Cannabis derived oils containing cannabinoids are generally recognized as safe. They are reliably non-alergenic, which explains, in part, their use in cosmetics. ******THCA – The most prevalent cannabinoid in typical raw marijuana is not psychoactive. THCA is the acid form of THC and can be converted to the intoxicant THC by either drying the plant material or by heating it. Marijuana leaf has lots of THCA and leaf can produced very inexpensively. Patients most often blend fresh leaf into a drink. Medically THCA has properties distinct from THC and research indicates THCA is probably useful for the treatment of: inflammation, spasms and cancer. Patient testimony also indicates its use for autoimmune conditions of the skin. ******THC – is delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol, which is also the primary intoxicant in cannabis. Research points to THC’s efficacy in the treatment of: pain, sleep apnea, depression, spasms, neural degeneration, nausea, wasting, free radicals and inner eye pressure. A new study has indicated THC may help prevent Alzheimer’s. ******THCV – tetrahydrocannabivarin, When foods containing marijuana or marijuana extracts are eaten cannabinoids are absorbed through the gut and processed by the liver. The liver converts THC in cannabis laden food into THCV, which is a stronger intoxicant than THC. Research points to THCV as a potential treatment for: epilepsy, hunger, diabetes and to stimulate bone growth. Delta 8 tetrahydrocannabinol: Similar to delta 9, but with no intoxicating effects. ******CBN – Cannabinol is the constituent in cannabis research points to as a sleep aid. Most marijuana has very little CBN; particularly good fresh marijuana. CBN is a product of the oxidization or break-down of THC. THC is oxidized by three factors: heat, light and exposure to oxygen. Treating your marijuana badly converts THC to CBN. Put some crunched-up marijuana on a plate and leave it in a sunny window. Due to the nature of its processing, hashish often has higher levels of CBN than marijuana does. Besides treating insomnia CBN is also showing promise for the treatment of: pain, spasms and free radicals. ******CBD – cannabidiol, besides THC and THCA the most prevalent cannabinoid found in most marijuana is CBD. CBD basks in the glory of more promising medical research than any other cannabinoid. CBD is not an intoxicant. The analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety actions of CBD often lead to generalized feelings of relief. Other research indications include: depression, psychosisspasms, epilepsy, neuro-degeneration, nausea, infection, diabetes, psoriasis, cancer, immune disorders, arterial blockage and as a digestive aid and bone growth stimulant. ******CBDA – the acid form of CBD, like THCA CBDA is converted into CBD by drying or heating. CBDA has properties unique from those of CBD. CBDA is not an intoxicant. Research indicates CBDA’s potential for treating inflammation and cancer. ******CBC – cannabichromene, Indications are CBC may well treat pain, inflammation and cancer and may help promote bone growth. ******CBCA – May help treat diabetes and fungal infections. ******CBG – cannabigerol, Shows promise as an anti-bacterial to treat infection and cancer and to promote bone growth. ******CBGA – The acid form of CBG. Indications are that CBGA may well help reduce inflammation. ******CGCA – CGCA seems to act as a anti-inflammatory agent.

THE ONLY REASON WHY THE STATES PATENTED IT – IS SO THEY CAN CONTROL IT WORLD-WIDE. BESIDES THE BIGGEST DRUG DEALERS IN OUR WORLD HISTORY ARE RUN THROUGH THE GOVERNMENTS! PROVEN FACTS. THEY MAKE BILLIONS OF DOLLARS EVERY YEAR SELLING DRUGS TO OTHER COUNTRIES ETC. NO ONE SHOULD HAVE TO HAVE A MARIJUANA CARD – OR ANY CARD FOR ANY CURE, THAT IS CALLED CONTROL OF CURES – AND IT IS WRONG AND AGAINST GOD! WHAT GIVES THE GOVERNMENTS THE RIGHT TO SAY, WHO LIVES OR WHO DIES FOR HOLDING BACK AND PATENTING ANY MEDICATION FOR ANYONE! NEXT, YOU CANNOT PATENT A PLANT WHICH GOD HAS PLACED ON THE SOIL OF OUR EARTH. THIS PLANT, AND MANY OTHERS BELONG TO MANKIND. ALL OF MANKIND SHOULD BE ABLE TO USE IT FOR WHATEVER REASON THEY NEED. THE GOVERNMENT CONTROL = BILLIONS!

NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO PATENT ANY PLANT ON OUR PLANET, IT’S ABSURD!

IT IS AS BAD AS MONSANTO – VACCINATION KING – BILL GATES – PATENTING SEEDS [GOD MADE SEEDS] CHANGING THEM TO MAKE US SICK AND THEN ACTING LIKE HE IS GOD – CONTROLLING AND POISONING THE FOOD SUPPLY!

IT HAS ALSO BEEN PROVEN THAT MARIJUANA – TAKES OUR SOLDIERS OUT OF THE MIND-CONTROL PLACED ON THEM BY THE ILLUMINATI SATANIC CABAL!
