Thousands Of American Women Just Stood Up And Sent Planned Parenthood A Message They Can’t Ignore
Rallies took place throughout the United States earlier this week to demand an end to the taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood.
World Net Daily reports that an “estimated 12,000 Americans in as many as 65 U.S. cities” took to the streets Tuesday to protest Planned Parenthood’s alleged violation of federal laws in the harvesting and sale of body parts from aborted babies.
The “Women Betrayed” rallies, coordinated by Students for Life of America and Pro-Life Future, came in the wake of the release of a series of damning videos by the pro-life group Center for Medical Progress, implicating Planned Parenthood and high ranking officials in the organization of participating in the gruesome practice.
Tuesday’s rally at the U.S. Capitol featured the following speakers: Sens. Ted Cruz and Rand Paul; Dr. Ben Carson; Reps. Marsha Blackburn, Andy Harris, Tim Huelskamp and Chris Smith; Marilyn Musgrave of the Susan B. Anthony List; Penny Nance of Concerned Women for America; Jeanneane Maxon of Americans United for Life; and Arina Grossu of the Family Research Council, according to WND.
Cruz gave a fiery address calling multiple times for the Department of Justice to open criminal investigations into Planned Parenthood and its officials seen in the videos. He encouraged Americans, regardless of their views on abortion, to watch the “horrifying” videos and ask: “Are these my values?”
“When we see the truth, after a time for truth comes a time for action. Today is a time for action,” the Texas senator said.
“Today the U.S. Department of Justice should open a criminal investigation whether Planned Parenthood nationally is a criminal enterprise. breaking the law.
“When you have multiple individuals caught on tape apparently confessing to multiple felonies that carry with them long jail times, justice must be served. I call on the U.S. Department of Justice to enforce the criminal laws and investigate Planned Parenthood,” Cruz said, drawing loud applause and cheers from the crowd of hundreds.
Sen. Rand Paul agreed with Cruz that the time to act is now and offered promising news to those in attendance. “There comes a time in the history of nations when we will all be judged on whether or not we took a stance for life. Now is that time,” Paul said. “Today we take a stand, and today I have good news: the Senate will vote on defunding Planned Parenthood before we go home in August,” he added, causing cheers to erupt from the audience.
Former pediatric neurosurgeon and presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson observed that the videos exposing Planned Parenthood have highlighted just how unstable the ground on which those who support abortion stand.
“I spent so many nights in the operating room, all night long, working, toiling so hard to save one of those lives,” said Carson. “You know one of the most wonderful aspects of life is when later on, you can see that same little baby as a 25- or 30-year-old who has their own little baby. And yet there was somebody, at some point, saying it was just a clump of cells that didn’t mean anything. Well isn’t it funny that those same people who say it’s a meaningless clump of cells are trying to get livers and lungs and kidneys? How could you have such organs from a meaningless clump of cells?”
“There was a time in this country where there were people who thought it was OK to own other people. They thought they could do anything they wanted with them because they belong to me. ‘I can beat them. I can kill them. I can do whatever I want to do to them.’ We, fortunately, as a society, matured and began to actually think about what the words of our Declaration of Independence and what the words of our Constitution actually meant. Well, those words are meaningful today, too, because they talk about life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Well guess what? There can be no liberty and pursuit of happiness if there is no life.”
On Thursday, the White House indicated that if Congress votes to defund Planned Parenthood, the president will oppose the effort. Asked if Obama would veto the bill, spokesman Josh Earnest said: “I know there has been an effort on the part of some Republicans to play some politics with some selectively edited videos…I can tell you that on balance, the President would not be supportive of any congressional effort” to defund the organization. “That is an effort that we oppose,” he added.
