Chicken Soup for the Soul’s “Hidden Heroes”; Humanity at its Best

mission-beach2Happy Thanksgiving to all the Canadians out there. Enjoy your long weekend.

The CBS Network had a program on TV this morning by this name, and before I had the chance to change to the music station, the story caught my interest.

It seems a few young guys in San Diego California set up a bulletin board on Mission Beach to help people in need.

They pinned $1 bills all over it with push-pins. The sign said, “Take what you need. Give what you can”.

Whether it was a college-related project or what the inspiration was, I don’t know because I didn’t see the beginning.

There was a graying, bearded fellow, I think with a bicycle, that stopped by but didn’t take any money and when they asked him why, he said because there were a lot more people in need than he was. As long as he had his mental health, he said, he was fine.

One of the fellows had a conversation with a black man who stopped to check out what they were doing and they asked him about his situation.

He said he worked every day but couldn’t pay the bills; particularly his electric bill.

The next peek I had at the TV showed one of the young men giving him money, and saying, “There you go. There’s your rent.”

The recipient looked dazed, as though he couldn’t comprehend what had just happened, but a big smile lit up his face and the two exchanged a hug.

Over the course of the day, people who were able pinned bills onto the board while others gratefully helped themselves.

It was an inspiring story, and I think an indicator that the energies are swinging us around to that “service to others” and “we are one” mentality more and more.

I hope television will be sharing a lot more programming like that.  ~ BP
