Do the profits of Value Village go to charity ?

Best Answer:  Hi,

I work for Value Village, and the profits do not go to charity however millions of dollars per year are given to non-profit charities in the U.S., Canada, and Australia. Here’s how it works:

Value Village (or Savers if you live outside the Pacific Northwest or Canada) has contractual agreements with local non-profit partners. These non-profits are paid a set price per pound for any clothing delivered to a Value Village store. Please note that Value Village pays for ALL the product delivered to them but per average only puts several items per 20-30 received on the sales floor.

Our non-profits benefit from this relationship because most of them do not have the ability or finances to open their own thrift store (or thrift store chain) like Goodwill or The Salvation Army.

Before I started working here, I thought that Value Village was actually stealing business/donations from charities and now I’m proud to work for a company that helps so many people in need. We are proud of what we do for the community.

Also, please know that if you bring any donations directly to one of our stores, a local non-profit will be paid per pound for your stuff! This actually means more money for them as they don’t have to send their trucks and drivers to your house to pick up.

Hope this helps.

Value Village is a FOR-PROFIT thrift store. Whatever products people donate that they don’t want, they actually throw out and do not donate to other charities. Like Linku86 mentioned, it is a thrift store – as in they sell used items. Everything you buy there is used. So if you want to buy people used clothing, then by all means. You will occasionally find big name brands like Gap, Brooks Brothers, Lacoste but they will be priced higher than the no name brands like Gildan etc. They also have a lot of stuff from clothing to kitchenware to sporting goods etc – but ALL USED. On a scale of 1-10, I’d give them a 2-3 for value and price. They are the most expensive thrift store I go to compared to other big charity ones.

When you say that “millions of dollars per year are given to non-profit charities in the U.S., Canada, and Australia,” you mean that Value Village donates Millions of $ to charity? Is that meaning the charities they partner with? If so, that figure ought to be something that can be validated through Guidestar or one of the charity organizations. Can you supply that link? I’d be interested in knowing about Value Village’s charitable works.

It sounds like the profits of Value Village don’t go to the charities they partner with, but rather that the company pays a nominal wholesale price for them. How much do they pay? (I’ve actually heard all kinds of things—everything from 4 cents, to 12 cents, to 40 cents per lb.

If that’s the case, one would guess that the profits that go to the company are much higher than the wholesale price they give in return for the donations given. How much greater are the company’s profits, and is there room for them to give more to those charities, since, after all, their stock in trade is dependent upon them?

Why would you ask this question in this category? Where in the world is the neighboring city? You need to realize Value Village is a thrift store, thus the clothes are not new. I personally have a problem with all thrift stores, but have to offer them some credibility to forming a chain by selling used clothes and other nick knacks.

Legitimate charitable efforts ought to report themselves to the charitable rating services so that potential contributors know which are in fact legitimate.
