Brazil Senate Moves To Impeach President Rousseff

 This week the Senate in Brazil decided to move forward with the impeachment process for President Dilma Rousseff by proceeding with an indictment on charges alleging that the President broke budget laws and mishandled finances. The senate voted 59-21 against the leftist leader after a 20-hour session that was headed by Chief Justice Ricardo Lewandowski. A verdict on the indictment is expected at the end of this month and it will require the votes of roughly two-thirds of the Senate in order to convict President Rousseff.

Rousseff’s opponents only required a slight majority in order to move forward with their attempts at removing her from her position. If convicted, Rousseff would be removed from office and the interim President Michel Temer would end-up serving out the rest of the term that would last through 2018.

The Senate needs a slight majority in the 81-seat Senate in order to move forward with the trial that would seek to charge Rousseff for having allegedly manipulated government accounts and spent without the proper congressional approval. Rousseff has been heavily blamed for playing a large role in driving the economy into what some say is the worst recession sine the 1930s. For now, President Rousseff has denied any wrongdoing and denounced the efforts to have her impeached; waving them off as a right-wing conspiracy that is focused on an accounting technicality. Workers Party Senator Jorge Viana says that there is no trial because a sentence has already been written and he alleges that the impeachment is being driven by the elite who he says oppose supposed social welfare gains in the country.
