Easy step by step instructions on how to build an affordable Tepee from a $25 (10×20 ft.) Ozark Trails Wal-Mart camo tarp. After spending the last couple winters cold and cramped in tarps and tents I decided to try a heated Tipi. Teepees are huge and spacious and designed to be used with a small fire in the middle or in my case a small wood stove, the G2-5″ Folding Firebox Stove which makes it the perfect 4 season camping/backpacking shelter. It would also work well with a tent heater like the Mr. Heater Little Buddy which I will be testing in Part 2 of this series.

This teepee is designed as a bare bones backpacking shelter. I do a lot of 15 to 20 miles hikes and wanted to try out a large teepee setup that was still practical for my uses. This version weights in at 3 lbs.

My objectives for this trip/video were to find an area with birch trees for 6 teepee poles and a nice sheltered flat spot to set up near a water source…and I found the perfect spot. It’s easily accessible with a pulk sled so I could bring all the amenities that a luxury campout can afford. I then gathered all 6 poles, cleaned them off and set up the entire teepee to test it out and practice pitching it. At the end of the day I was able to keep the poles lashed together and set them upright against an evergreen for protection from the elements so I can keep using them over the next couple months.

****WARNING: Always carry a carbon monoxide detector just in case the teepees ventilation or airflow is compromised. NEVER close your door all the way and never block the top vent while using fire in the tipi because you cut off the airflow to your fire and deadly gasses could build up in the teepee. Please do your research before attempting to heat a shelter. Whether it’s fire or propane they can be deadly if not well ventilated.****

This Tipi is simple to build if you know what your doing and have the materials.

Here is Step by Step tips for how to make the Tipi:

Step 1: Clear out a space big enough for the Tipi.( I made the space a little bigger than I needed just so I had the extra space.)

Step 2: Find a long/strong tree and cut it down. You will use the tree for the legs of the Tipi.

Step 3: Measure the length of the legs for the Tipi. (From the tree you just cut down). You want to make the legs about 2 1/2 ft. taller than you so you will still be able to stand up in the Tipi.

Step 4: Cut the legs to the length you want them and move them to the area you cleared out.

Step 5: Lash the Tipi legs together. ( I did 6 lashings and 3 frappings. You want the lashings to be very tight and close together.)

Step 6: Stand the legs up and spread them out to make the Tipi.
( The farther you move the legs apart the bigger it will be. But you will lose height by making it bigger.) ( I just spread the legs out to were I could still stand inside of the Tipi.)

Step 7: Lash support poles to the legs of the Tipi. (This will help keep the Tipi sturdy and they will help us lay the two side walls on the Tipi.)

Step 8: Put up the two walls. ( Just lay Branches on the support poles and make sure they are sturdy).

Step 9: Put leaves and twigs on the two side walls. (This will help keep the rain out and keep you warm. You can also put a layer of pine needles before the leaves to help them stay on better.)
