Earthbag Dome Workshop in Tepoztlan, Mexico
The focus of this workshop was building in a way that connected the structure and the people to the energy flows of the universe. Stella reminded participants to use all of their six senses to touch, listen, taste, smell, see, and intuit their surroundings.
Extra care was taken to build this dome as a living structure with breathable walls and natural waterproofing and plasters. The building will serve as a meditation dome and was built with a mix of raw earth and scoria rock. Lime was used as a stabilizer in the foundation and stem walls. The exterior plaster is cob made from a mixture of horse manure, clay, and sand which will be finished with a thin lime plaster for water proofing.
18 participants built the 2.5 meter (8ft) dome during the 5 day course. Participants ranged from 21-60+ years young and covered multiple states in Mexico. Participant’s backgrounds were architecture students, engineers, artists, permaculture educators, indigenous organizers, teachers, construction workers, a Haiti relief organizer, and people interested in esoterics and sacred geometry.
We want to thank all those who attended and especially to recognize Angel who hosted and organized the workshop for all his efforts. Thank you also to Ge for translating and Angel’s Aunt for the amazing meals.

Living in a bubble-like house | Euromaxx – My Kind of Place
In 70s, there was a DIY movement in France and it was all about building the house of your dreams. Joel Unal and his wife took on this trend and built their own personalised pod. Unal may not be an architect, but his house is so extraordinary, it was declared a National Heritage of France in 2010.

The Desert House: The most important architectural house you may have never seen. It is physically of the desert, a part of its surroundings. The strength of the hard and rugged protective shell exterior is drawn from the desert. The interior is a warm intimate space of flowing organic shapes wrapping gently around its inhabitants. Light enters through continuous openings that separate the towering concrete panels. The textures provide the touch and feel of the desert as materials were meticulously selected from the desert. The property highlights the masculine and feminine forms that are the hallmark of organic architecture.

Building an Earthbag Dome

Today we’re going to show you how to build an earthbag wall step-by-step. The main thing is to use good technique so that the wall is strong, level, plumb, and square. If you just pile the bags at random, it won’t be nearly as strong as what we’re going to show you today. One of the main things we’re trying to show here is good building technique so that the wall is very strong. You can think of this like large bricks that overlap each other, that overlap at the corners. If built correctly, this is extremely strong and can withstand an earthquake or hurricane. If built correctly, it can be very strong like the roundhouse we’re building now.

9 Day Earthbag Dome Workshop in New Zealand
In July 2009 Guiding Star Creations co-created this 9 day workshop with hosts Eric and Nancy. This dome was build as a WWOOFer’s (farm stay) cottage for Eric and Nancey’s 14 acre organic farm. The dome has a 3m(10ft) interior diameter and the walls are 30cm(1ft) thick. This dome was fitted with features to adapt dome building to wet climates. Theses features include a rap-around eave, cold application bitumen (asphalt emulson) waterproofing, interior door buttressing, and a ruble trench foundation with perimeter drain (French drain). Other features include a clay floor, cantilevered stairs, loft (mezzanine floor) bed space, and wood stove heating. Many thanks to the participants who’s efforts and collaboration made this dome possible and to Jo Pearsall and Bryan Innes with http://www.ecoshow.co.nz for organizing the workshop. Earthbag Structure Time-Lapse
This time lapse represents four days of work on a small earth bag structure. We spent two days excavating and two days building. The project is just about halfway complete. You can find more videos on this and related subjects at my friend Jacob’s youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/TheDarje…
In his words, “How will this enhance your personal liberty/autonomy/choice?: Cheap, energy efficient and ecologically sustainable building techniques may provide for your need for shelter by means of your own labor/effort, freeing you from the need for a mortgage in a context of a captured-market of finance.”
The time-lapse stills for this sequence were shot by Jacob Solt using a GoPro Hero3 and were rendered by me using linux and ffmpeg.

17 foot Earthbag Dome
Village Library
Earthbag. Tirelli, Dogon Country, Mali. 2010.
This project was produced and lead by Scott Howard. This is one of the most technical structures designed and completed by Scott so far. A two week-long workshop completed the majority of the structure. The building is almost entirely made of earth. It is a catenary arc, reaching nearly 17 feet in height. Serving as a library for many villages in the area, it is the first earthbag dome in Mali.

A small, 3.25 meter interior diameter meditation dome. In order to prevent any light from penetrating the interior, a double door system was devised. Air enters the dome through 3 pipes which run underground for a distance between 4 and 7 meters and is being sucked out by an air vent in the upper part of the dome. This space combines sacred proportions, complete darkness, and only very minimal sound pollution and hence effectively facilitates deeper states of meditative absorption.
