At that time the garden was bare, except for a few wattle trees growing on the property. Inspired by his love of tropical gardens and several trips to South-East Asia, Dallas began collecting plants and transforming the site into a fabulous, tropical hideaway The huge, concrete pot sculptures are in the garden. He and his father made them using moulds. The moulds were put in position, then lined with concrete. The concrete was coloured with red oxide and reinforced with bird wire. The biggest and most imposing structure in the garden is a large concrete dome shaped like a minaret on a mosque, which Dallas has been working on for almost 12 months. He reinforced the structure with galvanised weldmesh and decorated the sides using a mould made from a lampshade. Dallas’ well-known pink mosque-like folly has now been joined by his most recent addition – a Balinese-style temple. There are several handcrafted urns and a fabulous rocky waterfall and pond. The garden, created around a plantation-style Queenslander, includes understory plantings of colourful cordylines, crotons and large bromeliads as well as many topiary plants. Hand-crafted urns, fabulous red mosque-like folly, ponds, topiary garden. New walk-through grotto and waterfall, and Indian-inspired chhatris pavilion. The unusual mosque-style building, concrete urns,Mogul-inspired chhatris, the grotto complete with waterfall and the new Balinese temple gate, are hand-made.

This quiet little resort town is perfect for enjoying time on the water, in the water, in the forest, or straight up relaxing. Harrison Hot Springs is especially convenient for Vancouverities. It’s only an hour and a half from the city, and you get the relaxing, island vibe without ever having to take a ferry. Our journey begins right here where I’m staying, at the Harrison Hot springs resort. There’s not a whole lot of places to stay in town – and I gotta say, if you’re coming here, this looks like THE place to be in town. With the option of lakeside views and entrance to the famed hot springs included in the price of your stay, it makes for a pretty sweet getaway. I also learned once we were there that being on their mailing list can score you a really good deal. It sounds like they only email them out about 3 or 4 times a year, but prices are great and can include perks like a free breakfast. So maybe I’ll get in on this next time – now that I know about it! NOTE: The main hotel building has no air conditioning. You can stay in the East or West towers for air conditioned rooms. The resort has 5 pools which are fed from the spring’s source. The pools have varying temperatures. The Coast Salish peoples had known about the springs for years. They thought the water had supernatural or spiritual powers. Non-native people only stumbled across the springs hundreds of years after their existence was known by the Coast Salish. Legend has it that a boat full of gold rush miners capsized during a winter storm. Instead of plunging into cold water, they pleasantly found warm water! Harrison Hot Springs became a destination for those looking to relax – and cure a whole bunch of maladies, from paralysis to diabetes. These waters may be restorative, but expecting this is a bit ambitious! Food: One note before you do get into town – grocery options are limited, so stop to shop at Aggasiz before getting here. Hick Lake Loop – 6 KM trail http://www.tourismharrison.com/Hicks-… Hicks Lake itself is beautiful. The trail, though, is a bit odd. About half of trail has been turned into a gravel road, thanks to the hydro company. We even found a park ranger to ask if there was another trail we were missing, but nope – we were on it! The other half around the lake is a more typical trail. It’s an easy hike for the most part – but there are about 10 or so spots which are pretty dodgy. We’re talking broken bridges, slippery mud flats with no stable footing across it, that kinda thing. If that doesn’t sound good to you, maybe just enjoy the beaches. There few beaches on this lake which have spectacular scenery. Some are the large ones are easily accessible, and there’s a few great spots off the trail as well. The lake is in Sasquatch Provincial Park, and you can even go camping and fishing here. They stock the lake each year with about 1000 rainbow trout, and you’re free to fish providing you’ve got a fishing license – which you can easily apply for online. We didn’t need to stay here for the night, but we did enjoy a cinnamon bun which we brought with us from Chuck and Kitty’s Country Cafe – where we came across Chuck himself! Cinnamon buns may not be traditional hiking food, but I think I could start a trend! For dinner, got one of the best seats in the whole town! Well, at least as close to the ocean as you could get. We got a delicious dinner the Hungry Chef Eatery and took it to the picnic tables out at Rendall Park at the far end of the village. A perfect way to watch the sun set before heading back to hot spring pools. Whippoorwill Point https://www.vancouvertrails.com/trail… This morning we took the Whippoorwill Point and Sand Cove beach trail, which conveniently starts right by the resort. As you head to the start of the trail, you’ll also walk past the source of the spring and the 145degree Fareinheight water. You can’t get inside, but we did see some people soaking in the relaxing, yet distinctly sulphurous-smelling, mineral water mixed with lake water in a small stream beside it. Did you like this video? In Northern Spain, small farmers have stored their crops in “hórreos”- a granary raised on pillars – since the 13th century. Mainly found in regions like Asturias and Galicia, this construction is now part of the architectural heritage and is protected by the government. Many homeowners have restored these elevated structures for storage, parking (underneath) or even as tiny cabins. In the 1980s, Pedro’s father took two hórreos and joined them to create a small summer cabin for the family. The resulting structure is called a “panera” since hórreos have 4 pillars (or “pegollos” in Asturian) and paneras have 6 pillars. Pedro gave us a tour of the 33-square-meter space which he rents out on Airbnb. https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/11240827 It’s surprisingly spacious with two bedrooms (one with a full bed and the other with a bunkbed), a bathroom (complete with shower) and a kitchen (which includes an escañu: an Asturian bench that with an attached table that can be raised or lowered for different uses). Pedro’s home is unique, even to the area: there are thousands of hórreos in Asturias and Galicia and likely less than a few hundred are now used for housing, but given the delicate state of the architecture, some are trying to change this. “Walk and Horreo” crowdfunded enough money to refurbish their first hórreo in Galicia as a tiny shelter, using the slogan “preserve hórreos by sleeping in them” http://www.walkandhorreo.com/ Although hórreos are protected by the government, many homeowners find it too expensive to maintain or refurbish them and with the winter snows, every year more collapse. The buildings designed by Japanese architect Terunobu Fujimori seem straight out of a fairytale, but it’s his treehouses- with names like the “Too-high Teahouse” and “Flying Mud Boat”- that seem touched by magic. When Fujimori designed his first building, he was 45-years-old and a well-known architectural historian and author so he felt pressure not to simply copy his peers, or anyone in architectural history. With this first work, the Jinchokan Moriya Historical Museum, he reached back to the Neolithic period for inspiration, using mud-and-mortar walls and tree trunks shooting out from the roof. In the past 25 years, Fujimori has continued to experiment with his Neolithic modernism: a mix of natural materials and whimsical designs. He designed his own home, Tanpopo House, with volcanic-rock siding and glass and dandelions sprouting from the roof. The Lamune Hot Spring House was built around pine trees with their spires escaping from the roof. A building for a sake brewery, the Camellia Castle, is covered with grass and stone in a checkerboard pattern. A children’s museum, the Nemunoki Museum of Art, is covered in hand-rolled copper and living grass to resemble a “hairy mammoth”. Despite his success in creating fairytale homes and museums, Fujimori’s most fantastical work is his teetering teahouses. We visited two in his hometown in Chino, Nagano, Japan: his “Takasugi-an”, the “Too-high Teahouse”, is perched 20 feet in the air on two slim chestnut trees; his “Flying Mud Boat” is suspended only by wire-thin cables. For more than 400 years, charcoaling had been traditional industry in the area surrounding Skinnskatteberg, Sweden. Locals burnt charcoal for the iron industry and lived in rustic huts to stay close to the “coaling” process. To bring back this local tradition (which had died out in the middle of the 20th century), in 1996 the local municipality built 12 charcoal huts from mud and grass: each with 2 slim beds and a fire-burning stove. Today, Andreas Ahlse, owner of the Kolarbyn eco-lodge, rents out the 12 huts to guests who want to experience a back-to-basics lifestyle. Here you learn to chop your own wood, start a fire with fire steel, collect drinking water and bathe in the lake. “I think people are getting more and more interested in the old history and want to come out here and test how it was.” There’s no electricity or running water. The huts have just beds and a fireplace and candles. There’s a composting toilet, though you’re encouraged to pee in the woods as long as you avoid the blueberries. Architects Luís and Tiago Rebelo de Andrade wanted to “recreate the fantasy of tree houses” without building a house in a tree. Tasked to bring lodging to the Pedras Salgadas Park, a historic thermal spa in Northern Portugal, they wanted to get away from the “Swiss Family Robinson” paradigm and create something that resembled a wild animal in its native habitat, specifically a snake gliding between the trees. Wanting to limit the noise and disturbance to the park, the father-son team designed a prefab structure, built 100 kilometers from the site, with curves and a flow unlike the more stereotypically orthogonal modular construction. Limited by the dimensions of a flatbed truck, the “Tree Snake Houses” are only 20 square meters, but fit all the utilities of a tiny house: a kitchenette, dining table, toilet and shower and a bedroom that feels pressed against the forest. Built from local materials, mostly slate and wood, the suspended lodging hovers above the forest at the site of an old hotel. Instead of remodeling the old structure, the architects chose to demolish the top three stories and create the same number of rooms scattered throughout the park. Besides the Tree Snake Houses, they also created modular “eco houses” that are put together like three LEGOs pieces in different configurations to work around the trees. They are built on a stilt foundation to protect the park’s heritage: the groundwater. Pedro Salgadas was a popular spa town in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Like similar thermal resorts, visitors would stay for a couple of weeks or a month at a time and it had three hotels, a casino, a ballroom and the thermal baths. With the arrival of modern medicine, its popularity declined, but eventually it was rebuilt as a modern spa. The Rebelo de Andrades’ structures have helped repopularize the location for overnight guests lured here by the unique architecture, forest-like setting and, at times, a sense of “saudade”. “Saudade is a word that doesn’t exist in other languages,” explains Luis. “When you miss someone, saudade is what the fado sings a lot, about saudade”. One definition is a nostalgia for something that might have never happened, or will never happen again. Two tree snake houses have been built with several more to come, but Luis claims they won’t be built anywhere else, “When you arrive to another site, to another place, to another land, to another client, you have different constraints, I wouldn’t like to make the same in other places you know, I think they are specific for this place”.
