Earth’s Magnetic Poles Show Signs They’re About to Flip—Exposing Humans to Radiation and Planet-Wide Blackouts Historically, Earth’s North and South magnetic poles have flipped every 200,000 or 300,000 years—except right now, they haven’t flipped successfully for about 780,000 years. But the planet’s magnetic field is at long last showing signs of shifting. Although there’s no way to know yet for sure, it could be gearing up to flip once more, according to Undark Magazine. And that possibility is raising new speculation about what that means for planetary life. by Kastalia Medrano, Our planet’s magnetic field protects us from lethal levels of radiation from phenomena like solar rays. The dangerous particles never hit us directly, because upon entering the Earth’s atmosphere the magnetic field deflects them and forces them to move around, according to NASA. So the prospect of that field weakening, which it does when it’s getting ready to flip, is worrisome: It would leave us without sufficient protection. The Earth’s North magnetic pole has been wandering at 10-year intervals from 1970 to 2020, as seen in this animation from the National Centers for Environmental Information. NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information The Earth’s magnetic field extends out from electrical currents created by the metals in its core, generating invisible lines that touch back down at the planet’s opposing magnetic poles. Cosmic radiation expert Daniel Baker, director of the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado, Boulder, believes that the next pole reversal could likely render some areas of the planet unlivable, according to Undark. That devastation could arrive through multiple avenues. The combination of powerful space particles, like unfiltered solar rays, cosmic rays and ultraviolet B rays (the stuff your sunscreen bottle warns you about), would smash through our battered ozone layer and lead us the way of the dinosaurs. Our infrastructure wouldn’t fare much better. Since satellite grids are linked, once radiation eats through, more will follow, causing a cascading mass blackout, among other disasters, according to Undark. Because we haven’t reached that point yet, scientists are using imagery from satellites to track the magnetic field’s movements. Since 2014, Swarm—a trio of satellites from the European Space Agency—has allowed researchers to study changes building at the Earth’s core, where the magnetic field is generated. Historically, Earth’s North and South magnetic poles have flipped every 200,000 or 300,000 years—except right now, they haven’t flipped successfully for about 780,000 years. But the planet’s magnetic field is at long last showing signs of shifting. NASA Their observations reveal that both the molten iron and nickel are draining out of the Earth’s core. That kind of restless activity could indicate that the field is preparing to flip, according to Undark. Protective measures could include building more radiation-fortified satellites, plus shoring up ones that are already operational, according to the International Business Times. Not all of the Earth’s polarity reversal attempts are successful; the poles last put out a botched effort around 40,000 years ago, according to Futurism. And scientists have yet to establish a cause-and-effect relationship between pole reversals and mass extinctions. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t one. We might not know when the poles will finally complete their long-overdue switch, but we at least have the advantage of being able to prepare. HIGH ALTITUDE PHOTOS… ✔The photos, acquired by the Operational Land Imager on the Landsat 8 satellite, show the sands that grew into the island first registered in November 2016 in the shoal area off Cape Point. ✔A second image, taken in January 2017, shows waves were clearly breaking on the shallow region off the cape’s tip, NASA said. The site of those breakers is where the island eventually formed. ✔The third image, taken this month, shows the island clearly formed, and nearly a mile in length. ✔“What exactly causes a shallow region to become exposed is a deep question, and one that is difficult to speculate on without exact observations,” said geomorphologist Andrew Ashton in a NASA report on the island. ✔One possibility, he said, is water levels going down after storm-driven waters piled up sediment to near the surface. ✔Shelly Island came to the nation’s attention about two months ago and has become known for being mysterious and forbidding, including news on July 14 that a World War II-era military training device washed up on shore. The device was shaped like a torpedo and prompted an evacuation of the island, which is popular with tourists. ✔The island got its unofficial name, Shelly Island, because it is littered with numerous and well-preserved shells. But it is also a treacherous place to visit, with a deadly current separating it from Cape Point. The waters in the channel are known to be popular with sharks. ✔Experts say the island could be swept away by the next big storm off the coast. In late December 2014 into early 2015, a submarine volcano in the South Pacific Kingdom of Tonga erupted, sending a violent stream of steam, ash and rock into the air. When the ash finally settled in January 2015, a newborn island with a 400-foot summit nestled between two older islands – visible to satellites in space. Images have emerged of the island’s surface, 45km (28 miles) north-west of Tonga’s capital, Nuku’alofa. The island – which is 500m (1,640 feet) long – was formed after an eruption at the Hunga Tonga volcano that started in December. One scientist said the island was likely to be highly unstable, and dangerous to visitors. The volcano – the full name of which is Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai – erupted for the second time in five years in December. Video captured on a boat hundreds of metres from the volcano showed fast-rising plumes of gas emerging from the sea. Satellite images taken within days of the eruption showed new rock formations, and more sediment in the sea. And next to one of the two islands that previously made up Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai was a large circular crater. UPDATE: Japan Earthquake strikes near the sea floor rise area! April 28: After days of silence, we now see the Northern part of Japan show movement. VERY CLOSE TO THE LOCATION which just experienced the sea floor rise and ground collapse!!!!!!!!!!! So much for the rise and collapse being blamed on “ocean waves” ! Also, this is the area I just warned several hours ago,warned yesterday, and warned 3 days ago in my earthquake forecast. North Japan near Hokkaido . http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquake… _______ UPDATE April 26 – Now reported as a large collapse followed by a sea bed floor rise. One area subsided, the other area rose. NHK report was typed (by them) wrong? Says 300 meters HEIGHT in the NHK article. Other articles say 15 meters high. It looks taller than 40 feet… hmm.. some reports saying 10 meters WIDE.. other reports saying 30 meters WIDE… hmm.. Regardless of the difference in footage, ANY footage moving upwards in Japan is worthy of note. Normally the crust moves in millimeters and inches.. not meters and feet! Major global earthquake activity is taking place, and serious crustal movement is obviously underway in the region around North Japan. The new land began rising from the sea yesterday morning (April 24, 2015) with just a 1 meter rise (3 feet), then began rising rapidly, the event is still ongoing as of April 25th into 26th 2015. The new land mass has now risen over 50 feet and 300 meters long (near 1,000 feet), and near 10 meters wide (30 feet)! Not ‘small’ by any means, and a very rare occurrence to top it off. This is being attributed to crustal movement in the area.
