Up to 5,000 army members are deployed for the WEF.
The first soldiers started the WEF mission on Monday. They ensure on-site security, protect the airspace and take care of the transport of heads of state and government.
The army deployment to protect the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos GR has begun.
The majority of the up to 5,000 army personnel deployed on Monday. The WEF starts next Monday.
Parliament set the upper limit of up to 5,000 army personnel when it approved the army deployment. Some of those called up will be deployed during the five-day meeting in the Landwassertal, as the Defense Department announced on Monday. Army members are also deployed for the WEF in the rest of Switzerland, for example to maintain air sovereignty, logistics and leadership support.
The civil authorities of the canton of Graubünden are responsible for the army operation. Army flies politicians to Davos (and then to GITMO hopefully) The army is responsible for air sovereignty. The air force is strengthening the air police service and carrying out surveillance flights for the benefit of the canton of Graubünden and air transport of people protected under international law.
The Air Force works closely with partners from Austria and Italy to ensure airspace security. Restrictions in the airspace over Davos apply on Friday and from Saturday to Saturday in a week. Arrivals and departures at regional airports and heliports are governed by special rules and flights require approval. Parliament approved 2.55 million francs each for the army’s deployment at the WEF annual meetings in 2022, 2023 and 2024. This is less than in previous years because the WEF Foundation contributes more to these costs than before.
1000 additional flight movements
Many WEF guests are expected to travel to Davos via Zurich Airport. According to a statement on Monday, the airport expects around 1,000 additional flight movements, about the same number as in previous years. In addition to business jets and helicopter flights, state aircraft are expected in Zurich. The airport names the types Boeing 747-800, 747-900 and 777 as well as Airbus 330 and 340. For aviation fans and aircraft spotters, it offers longer opening hours on the viewing terrace in Terminal B and special tours.
