RCMP statement on foreign interference report by National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians: The RCMP can confirm there are investigations into a broad range of foreign interference in Canada, including matters which intersect with democratic institutions. The RCMP will not provide comment whether there is an active criminal investigation into any parliamentarian. The RCMP has spoken publicly about the problem of foreign interference and believe more public attention to this matter is necessary. At the same time, the RCMP must exercise significant caution with respect to public statements related to ongoing investigations. An RCMP confirmation of such an investigation has the potential to cause damage to reputations prior to meeting an appropriate level of proof, or to interfere with an ongoing investigation. For these reasons, the RCMP does not generally confirm or release information relating to criminal investigations until charges are laid, rendering it a matter of public record. When an investigation results in criminal charges, the RCMP would confirm its investigation, the nature of any charges laid and the identity of the individual(s) involved. The RCMP was an active participant in the NSICOP review and provided detailed information about RCMP knowledge and understanding of the threat. The NSICOP report is bringing important attention to this matter, and this attention is an important tool in combatting foreign interference. With respect to the information contained in the NSICOP report, and what the RCMP knew, and did not know, at the time, the RCMP is part of the national security community and works closely with partners to combat all types of national security threats.
