Crystal Goomansingh looks at how Canada marked one of the most important days in the history of the Second World War. While the military strategy of D-Day is well known 80 years later, there is far less discussion about why so many young men fought. As Dawna Friesen explains, the 14,000 Canadians who were part of the Normandy landings were all volunteers who chose to go to war. Calls are only growing for the federal government to identify the MPs accused of “wittingly” assisting efforts of foreign states to meddle in Canadian politics. David Akin explains why the alleged colluders likely would never be charged and why Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc says naming them would be irresponsible. A water main break has caused Calgary’s water levels to plummet to dangerously low levels, so the city is urging residents to conserve water. Heather Yourex-West reports on some of the restrictions and why experts say the water main break serves as a warning to other communities. Hamas says at least 40 Palestinian civilians, including children, are dead in Deir Al-Balah, Gaza, after an Israeli airstrike hit a school where thousands of people were sheltering and sleeping. Israel says it was targeting a Hamas compound inside the school. Jackson Proskow reports on what Israel is accusing Hamas of and how the attack is hampering efforts to reach a ceasefire. Plus, 80 years after Canadian troops stormed northern France and freed its villages from the Nazis, expressions of gratitude to Canada are still prominent along the coast near Juno Beach. Dawna Friesen hears from two Normandy residents about their fond memories of liberation and their fears of what could happen if history is forgotten.
