Natural Building and a New Sense of the Earth

Have you ever dreamed of another kind of life? Not the job that you don’t want to go off to in the morning, or the house you have to keep on paying for year after year, but a life closer to the earth, a little place in the country that you build yourself, a garden and some solar panels for electricity, time to be with those you love and to do the things you most want to do. An impossible dream? Maybe not. Right now people all over are working to create an alternative to a consumer society that gives us less and less satisfaction and is more and more destructive to the earth and to us, as well. Explore the world of natural building and meet some of its pioneers who are creating beautiful and inexpensive houses out of earth and straw, houses that you can make, too. This is a way of building that can transform how you see the earth and yourself. Visit: Linda Smiley and Ianto Evans who pioneered the use of building with earth, straw and sand called cob in the U.S. and who now run the North American School of Natural Building in Coquille, Oregon where they and their students have used natural building methods to create a little village. Coenraad and Courtney Rogmans who took a piece of undeveloped land, built straw bale and cob buildings complete with solar electricity and a water catchment system, and who teach natural building workshops. Taylor Starr at White Oak Farm, an organic farm and educational center, which is putting the final touches on a striking timber-framed straw bale and cob community center. Brendan Flanagan, with his family and friends, turned a remote wooded hillside into a snug community of homes and gardens. Rob Bolman, an advocate of incorporating natural building techniques into mainstream building practices, who created an ecovillage in the middle of Eugene, Oregon, and who speaks passionately about the link between natural building and social justice. Meka Bunch who after only a week-long workshop, built his own elegant cob cottage and who works sharing natural building with people abroad. And Kiko Denzer, a sculptor and cob builder, and his wife Hannah, an organic gardener and baker, who transformed a dilapidated outbuilding in the country into a cozy cob home surrounded by beautiful gardens. (Remixed audio – go to new version at http://youtu.be/WezjLz3l5cw) The Eco-Sense House is alive! From dream (see episode 103*) to reality. Its curving cob walls embrace Ann and Gord Bairdapos;s three-generation family. A living roof offers summer cooling and filters winter rains stored for garden water. The composting toilet provides rich soil for the veggie gardens, which supply much of the familyapos;s food. This “net zero energy” house uses the sun for electricity, hot water, and warm floors. Tour this small-footprint house, designed as part of the ecosystem surrounding it. Episode 230. EagleYew House — Efficient Technology With an Artist’s Aesthetic

Artist Ezio Cusi’s house is a work of art —and also built smart. The timber-framed house with light clay walls is made with mostly local natural materials. For the cold winters, it has an annualized geo-solar system (AGS) which in summer transfers hot water from solar panels to storage in the ground. In the cool months the heat flows back into the house, warming especially the periphery. It’s comfortable even in the top story. A hand-sculpted dragon provides whimsy as well as warming in the masonry rocket stove — which burns far more efficiently than a wood stove as well as offering a nice warm bench to sit on! Art is embedded in walls while many windows are graced with original stained glass. Enjoy the blend of beauty and functionality. Episode 317. Kyle’s Crazy House: Earthen Plaster on the Gnestle

Dancing Rabbit is the best place to see many examples of natural building first hand. We have over 30 natural buildings in one place built from mostly local, natural, and reclaimed materials. In this video, and the next few I post, I will be showcasing the buildings of Kyle Yoder, who’s lived at DR for several years and is known for the organic forms of his design. One of the great things about natural building is the freedom it gives builders to think beyond the 90 degree angle. Kyle’s just begun the finish plaster of his own home, the Gnestle, and we’re going to get a peek at his work and a little explanation from the builder himself. To follow what Kyle and the other “Critters” are doing at DR, check out the Critter Blog. http://www.crittercollective.net/

Tiny Hobbit House with Amazing Green Roof & Straw Bale Walls

Published on Dec 18, 2016

Video tour of an incredible underground hobbit home that is completely off-grid. It is built with straw bale walls and limestone plaster, log roof rafters and support columns, and a stunning green roof with a glass dome in the centre to bring in a lot of natural light. This tiny hobbit house was built by Dior and Sylvain from Les Toits du Monde (http://www.lestoitsdumonde.ca/_en/ind…) which in English means Roofs of the World. It is a wooded eco-resort with trails running through the forest and all kinds of neat cabins and green buildings to stay in. They also have a tree house, yurts, and a tipi in addition to the hobbit house, and they are located in Nominingue, Quebec — a small town that’s less than 3 hours from Montreal and Ottawa. The hobbit house has solar power for the lights, a single-burner propane cooktop in the kitchen, a portable solar shower and composting 5-gallon bucket toilet with sawdust in the bathroom, a woodstove for heat, and they deliver jugs of drinking water to each cabin that are filled from their well at the main house. In addition to being sustainable and off-grid, the interior design of the tiny house is quite stunning. They’ve used natural, unfinished wood for countertops, benches, a table, and more. It all adds to the feeling that your house is a part of the woods. It’s minimalist living at it’s best. The underground home is a vacation rental that sleeps 4 in a double bunkbed, and it has quite an open concept but the floor plan could be easily modified to create more privacy for a long-term living situation. A minimalist family or couple could easily create a cozy home in a space like this and it would probably be quite a budget-friendly building project since most of the building materials seem to have been taken from the forest around the hobbit house. We had a blast touring the tiny underground hobbit house at Les Toits du Monde (and eating Dior’s fresh, homemade bread with Sylvain) and we are excited to share a video tour of their amazing tree house cabin in an upcoming video. It has a hanging bridge! In the meantime, you can learn more about this eco-resort on their website here: http://www.lestoitsdumonde.ca/_en/ind… and on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/lestoitsdumonde Thanks for watching! Welcome to my Mud Home.

A virtual tour of my mud home in Turkey. What’s it like to live inside a small earthbag house? And would I do it again? If you’d like to know how I made this house and what’s it like to live in it, go to the http://www.themudhome.com. There’s a free earthbag PDF to download too. Many people ask about my beloved dog. She was not starved (what a judgement!) but was very sick with leishmania.
